Dear UCC-Land,
A wise person once told me that it is best to give bad news sandwiched within good news. Thus, you will find a short quip about UCCs opening match of 2023 somewhere near the centre of this article. So first, to the good news… the 2022 Captain’s Report!
Now some of you might be thinking to yourself, shouldn’t we have been plied with this at the end of the season just gone? Well, my response to this is that the Jarrett household is heavily influenced by Ethiopian culture with one unique element being our selective use of the Ethiopian calendar. Such a calendar pronounces today’s date as 14.9.2015 (https://www.ethiopiancalendar.net/). Thus, you could say that this report is actually ‘early’. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.
For the Saturday League side, 2022 was an enjoyable, but challenging year on the cricket field. After gaining promotion to Div. 3 on the back of a stella year in 2021, we knew the lofty heights of Div. 3 would stretch us. But remarkably, only did this occur on occasion. A season of ‘18 played, 4 wins, 12 loses, 2 conceded’ might look to many as a ‘disaster’, but this was not the case. All bar three games saw UCC ‘in the hunt for a win’ with the scalps of Pembury (promoted to Div. 2 this year) and Betsham AWAY being the standout results.
For the first time we saw Jon Sorrell top the UCC batting charts with 447 runs (TScore 90, 34.38 avg.) and Andy Pinder top the UCC bowling charts with 16 wickets (TPerf 3/23, 28.81 avg.). Of note were performances from our youngsters, with George Sorrell caressing 184 runs (TScore 40, 16.73 avg.) and Inigo Streets taking 11 wickets (TPerf 2/22, 29.82 avg.).
21.5.23 UCC vs. Luddesdowne RESULT – Good time had by all at pub after match. Rainbow seen in sky on way home.
A big thank you again to all those players and supporters who do so much for the club behind the scenes. Special mention goes to Nicko Watson for tirelessly preparing the best pitch in the division (if not the League!), Bockers for his work with the Sunday extravaganza, co-captains Joe and Paul (and George for half a game!) for sharing the leadership load, Chris for his most-excellent quiz, and Hawkeye for his dedication to wrangling the vegetation that garnishes our most elegant venue. Thank you also to fellow committee members for the work you put in pre, during and post season, ably led by our fantastic President. Thank you ABS. I’d also like to thank the Underriver Village Association for again going ‘above and beyond’ in support of our club. The connection to our location remains vitally important and I am grateful for the continued interest and generosity shown by those in our village.
See you on the field in 2023.
